Acute Services Block – Luton & Dunstable University Hospital
Kier Group
2025
GSI was commissioned by Kier to deliver the fire stopping and intumescent paint package for the new Acute Services Block at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital. The project involved the construction of a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance patient care and support NHS staff in delivering critical services.
The new acute services and ward blocks incorporate a delivery suite, a midwifery-led birthing unit, a neonatal intensive care unit with parent accommodation, an ambulatory surgical unit for day case surgery, theatre suites, and a critical care unit. A new five-storey link building, housing three passenger lifts, seamlessly connects the new facilities to the existing hospital, creating a fully integrated healthcare environment.
GSI’s scope of works included:
- Fire stopping and acoustic sealing around service penetrations through fire walls and ceiling voids
- Application of intumescent coatings
- Ensuring compliance with fire ratings of 120 minutes
The works were highly complex and required careful planning and coordination to meet stringent safety and performance standards. GSI’s delivery ensured that all fire-rated elements were completed to a tested and certified standard, providing maximum protection across the new facility.
